In the Heart of Bogotá: A New Normal

Centro
Bogotá feels transformed. Once vibrant streets are now quiet, shaped by pandemic restrictions. Masks are everywhere, discipline prevails. My hotel stay feels surreal—am I the only guest? Yet, a warm welcome and a bowl of ajiaco in Tierra Buena remind me: I’ve arrived once more.

A City Transformed by the Pandemic

I’m back in the metropolis, and my anticipation for its famously contrasting life was immense. However, the pandemic has undeniably reached Colombia. Numerous measures have been implemented, significantly restricting and altering public life.

Even my first night in the hotel was dominated by an unsettling quiet. I couldn’t help but wonder: Am I the only guest here?

On my initial strolls through the city, I could hardly believe my eyes. Just a year ago, these streets were overflowing with street vendors, bustling crowds, and countless tourists. Now, the city feels empty, there’s little noise, minimal traffic, and only a few masked individuals cross my path. Masks, of course, are mandatory, as per the current regulations for public and enclosed spaces. The discipline of the Colombians is remarkable; everyone respects the rules.

Later in the evening, I accept an invitation to Tierra Buena. The welcome is incredibly warm, and they serve my favorite dish, Ajiaco. It’s a moment that confirms: I have truly arrived home again.
