A Scenic Journey to Salento Our journey begins early in the morning with an eight-hour bus ride from Bogotá to Armenia. As we wind through the Andean mountains, breathtaking landscapes unfold before us—rolling hills, endless coffee fields, and mist-covered peaks. From Armenia, a short ride takes us to Salento, where we are instantly struck by the town’s tranquility and natural beauty.
Our hotel sits atop the Mirador de Salento, offering panoramic views of the Cocora Valley and the snow-capped peak of Nevado del Tolima. Vibrant birds fill the air with life, and even horses roam freely through the quiet streets. In this serene setting, Colombia’s biodiversity truly comes to life.
Exploring the Streets of Salento Wandering through Salento feels like stepping back in time. Carrera 6, the town’s main street, is lined with brightly painted colonial houses, artisan shops, and cozy cafés. The Plaza de Bolívar bustles with local vendors selling Colombian street food, while colorful Willy jeeps—iconic to the region—transport travelers to nearby attractions.
As the sun sets, we climb the seemingly endless stairs to Mirador Alto de la Cruz. From this viewpoint, we are rewarded with a breathtaking vista of Salento and the surrounding valleys bathed in golden light.
A Jeep Adventure to the Cocora Valley To beat the tourist crowds, we set off early for the Cocora Valley, home to Colombia’s national tree—the wax palm. These towering giants, reaching up to 60 meters, create an almost surreal landscape, especially when morning mist blankets the valley. The rugged jeep ride through the lush valley adds to the adventure, passing waterfalls and scenic viewpoints along the way.
A Coffee Experience at Finca Momota No visit to Salento is complete without a coffee tour. We choose Finca Momota, known for its sustainable practices and small-group experiences. Despite the rain, we are warmly welcomed and introduced to the intricate world of coffee cultivation. Walking through the plantation, we gain a newfound appreciation for the dedication and expertise required to produce the perfect cup. Coffee growing here is more than a trade—it’s a way of life.
Unmissable Spots in Salento Salento boasts an array of charming cafés and bars, but two stand out. Jesús Martín Café, tucked away in a side street near the main square, offers an exceptional coffee experience in a cozy atmosphere. The passionate owner even gives us a behind-the-scenes look at his German-made roasting machine—a surprising connection to home.
For a taste of local life, Café Danubio on Carrera 6 is the place to be. A traditional billiard bar, it becomes the town’s social hub by midday, filled with laughter, games, and vibrant conversations.
