Plaza de Bolívar: The Heartbeat of a Nation
We stand on the Plaza de Bolívar, the governmental core, surrounded by all the important buildings and institutions, including the Presidential Palace, Casa de Nariño. Here lies the very essence of Colombia and Bogotá. It serves as the gateway to the historic center of La Candelaria, the very place where Bogotá was founded in 1538.
As you move across this plaza, you can feel the weight of the past. It’s a moment to pause and reflect. This is a place where far-reaching decisions, not just for the independence movement, were and continue to be made. It’s a site where many have fallen, a central point for demonstrations, and yet, a place of enduring hope. It’s fitting that the Catedral Primada de Colombia is also located here, offering a sanctuary of calm amidst the historical currents.
La Candelaria: A Tapestry of History and Culture
La Candelaria is Bogotá’s historical and cultural epicenter. It’s characterized by numerous houses and buildings constructed in colonial and republican styles, often vibrantly painted. Here, you navigate cobblestone streets and become a witness to history.
This district is Bogotá’s cultural hub. Within the impressive Casa de Moneda de Colombia complex, you’ll find the Museum of Art of the Banco de la República, the Botero Museum, and the Miguel Urrutia Art Museum. The Military Museum and the Independence Museum are also nearby. Across the street lies the grand Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango, housing an extensive historical archive.
The National Theatre of Colombia, Teatro de Cristóbal Colón, is an extraordinary architectural masterpiece. Unfortunately, securing a ticket for a guided tour there isn’t easy. Beyond this, there are many off-theaters hosting unique events.
The special charm of this district also stems from its numerous restaurants and cafés. Sometimes, finding a specific restaurant can be tricky. You might stand before an unassuming colonial facade, like that of Maria Candelaria, unaware that you’ve reached your destination. Yet, you’ll then be surprised by a beautiful, light-filled inner courtyard and presented with a menu that delights every gourmet.
Plaza del Chorro de Quevedo: The Pulsating Core
The central point of this district is the Plaza del Chorro de Quevedo. La Candelaria is known as a popular meeting spot for intellectual fringe groups and artists. Students from the four nearby universities particularly enjoy gathering on this plaza. In front of the small chapel at Plaza del Chorro de Quevedo, speeches and lectures with political ambitions, mindset themes, or life philosophies are held every day and evening. Being there is a cultural experience. There are so many opportunities to linger, and live music is a standard feature here. At this very spot, the heart of Bogotá truly pulsates.
The Entrance Doors of La Candelaria
My special attention is drawn to the old front doors of La Candelaria. Old house doors and entrances hold a deep fascination for me. I often wonder what has transpired behind these doors. Were the people happy and content? What was life like behind these facades? You find the doors here in all variations: old, well-maintained, and dilapidated. Colorful or revealing their natural wooden structure. Perhaps a mirror of our own lives, unfolding in all their diverse variations.
